It also links to Adam Thoroughgood's original 1635 land grant and to the area's first modern development. Its outbuildings were cited in a 1992 survey as the only antebellum outbuildings surviving in Virginia Beach.","narrative":"Set near the Western Branch of the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach, this one-and-a-half-story wood-frame farmhouse grew in three stages. The first four-bay section is believed to date from about 1699-1700, when John Thoroughgood built on his share of Adam Thoroughgood's 1635 land grant. Around 1820 the Moseley family doubled the house, creating an unusual seven-bay, central-passage plan with Federal-style crown molding and recessed panel wainscoting. A kitchen, baths and bedroom were added in 1940. A brick cistern from about 1805-1810 is now part of the basement. A smokehouse, a dairy or spring house and a garage survive nearby; a 1992 survey cited them as the only antebellum outbuildings left in Virginia Beach. The farm operated until 1954, when it became part of the county's first modern residential development. The property was listed for its well-preserved Colonial craftsmanship and its tie to the area's earliest settlement.","period_of_significance":"C. 1700 - 1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"COLONIAL: Postmedieval English","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with secondary structures; restoration work has been carried out, including a 2006 renovation of the 1940 addition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.082428-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/6839/41683975/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/08000079.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000079/ed32b67a5a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000079/ed32b67a5a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"SueCorcoran","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hermitage_house_va_beach_9_2012_(1).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">SueCorcoran</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hermitage_house_va_beach_9_2012_(1).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683975","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hermitage_(Virginia_Beach,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16842736"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/virginia-beach/hermitage-the-08000079/"}
