The Austin Company of Cleveland, Ohio, designed and built it.","why_significant":"It reflects the leading role of Southern Stove Works in Richmond's stove manufacturing between 1880 and the mid-twentieth century (Criterion A). It is also an early example of industrial steel-frame design in Richmond and the only documented Austin Company-designed complex in the city (Criterion C).","narrative":"Built in 1920 on Dinwiddie Avenue in Richmond's Manchester area, this factory complex was commissioned by Southern Stove Works to make stoves and heaters. The Austin Company of Cleveland designed and built it using its Austin Method, which relied on standardized plans and prefabricated steel frames. Brick curtain walls and large multiple-light steel windows led the company to call it \"the modern daylight plant.\" Original buildings included an office, a long warehouse and pressing department, a foundry with an overhead crane, washrooms, and a reinforced concrete pattern storage building. Today they are joined into two main buildings by later infill, and a carpenter shop has been demolished. Southern Stove Works, founded in 1880, was one of Richmond's two largest stove makers and later dominated local production. The complex is recognized for that industrial role and as Richmond's only identified Austin Company design, with significance running from 1920 to 1950.","period_of_significance":"1920-1950","architect_builder":"The Austin Company","architectural_style":"Modern Movement","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function is listed as manufacturing facility; the buildings are described as remarkably intact, with some later infill and additions, and the complex is fenced.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.223163-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/83/6830/41683083/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/08000076.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000076/576ec5154f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000076/576ec5154f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Morgan Riley","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthernStoveWorksManchester.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan Riley</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthernStoveWorksManchester.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683083","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Stove_Works,_Manchester","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16900365"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/southern-stove-works-manchester-08000076/"}
