It is significant locally for Transportation and Architecture. It also has potential for archeological study, and its post office is the only known nineteenth-century rural post office building surviving in the county.","narrative":"Beach Station is a small railway village set back from Beach Road in south-central Chesterfield County, Virginia. Nathaniel B. Perdue and his son George built it around 1890. The eight-acre site holds two houses, a depot, a post office, an outbuilding, two railroad shanties and the brick foundation of a general store. The depot served the Brighthope Railway, a narrow gauge line that grew out of the Clover Hill coal railroad, and later the Farmville & Powhatan and Tidewater & Western companies until 1917. Beach Station is one of only two confirmed surviving stations of twenty original stations and sidings on the Tidewater & Western line in the county, and its post office is the only known nineteenth-century rural post office building left in the county. The buildings are wood-frame with weatherboard siding and metal roofs, and they keep much of their original fabric, including pressed tin interior finishes in the George Perdue House. The store site may also hold archeological evidence about the railroad and coal industries.","period_of_significance":"1890-1917","architect_builder":"Perdue, Nathaniel B.; Perdue, George Porter","architectural_style":"Other: Late 19th and early 20th century Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Two dwellings, depot, outbuilding, post office and two railroad shanties survive; the general store survives only as a deteriorated brick foundation. The form lists current functions as work in progress, and the owner plans to repair and reinstall historic windows.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.758982-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/6801/41680178/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/08000067.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000067/668aed689f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000067/668aed689f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"James Shelton32","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beach_Station_(Chesterfield,_Virginia).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">James Shelton32</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beach_Station_(Chesterfield,_Virginia).JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"15001054","name":"Pocahontas State Park Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/pocahontas-state-park-historic-district-15001054/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680178","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beach_Station_(Chesterfield,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712004"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/chesterfield-county/beach-station-08000067/"}
