Construction began in 1923 and the house was ready for occupancy in 1926.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that the house is a distinguished and highly intact example of early twentieth-century Tudor Revival residential architecture in northern Steuben County. It is the work of prominent Rochester architect J. Foster Warner and reflects the prosperity of the Rowe family. Its custom features and high-quality materials are comparable to contemporaneous houses in Rochester, Elmira and Buffalo.","narrative":"Set on a 28.8-acre parcel along Rowe Road in northern Steuben County, this two-story Tudor Revival house has a high hipped roof, cross gables and dormers. Its first story is brick and cast stone, with half-timbered stucco above and an attached three-bay garage wing at the rear. Inside, black walnut and gumwood woodwork, teak floors, stained glass medallions and a cast stone Tudor-arched fireplace survive. Louis Rowe, a New York City attorney who had built a personal fortune, hired Rochester architect J. Foster Warner to design the house for his brother William. Work began in 1923 and the house was ready in 1926, built by Welsh craftsmen and local tradesmen. Because of its remote location, it received its own water system with a 24,000-gallon reservoir and a fire suppression system. The house is recognized as a highly intact work from the mature period of Warner's career.","period_of_significance":"1926","architect_builder":"J.
