It is described as a tightly knit, well-defined village space unlike anything else in the New Kingston Tract. It is listed under Criteria A and C for community planning and architecture.","narrative":"New Kingston is a small, unincorporated hamlet in the northern Catskill region of Delaware County, New York. Its historic district includes about thirty properties lining both sides of County Route 6 beside the West Branch of the Plattekill. Houses and their outbuildings dominate, along with a former wagon and blacksmith shop, a store and post office, small farm dependencies, a church and the remains of a creamery. Early buildings reflect vernacular Greek Revival design, while more than half of the houses date to the 1870s and 1880s and show frontal gables, chamfered porch posts and turned and scrollsawn trim. A 1900 Presbyterian church, already individually listed, anchors the northern end. The district was recognized for community planning and architecture across the period c1845 to c1940. Its streetscape, natural setting and buildings have changed very little, giving the hamlet an unusually compact, intact character within the larger New Kingston Tract.","period_of_significance":"c1845-c1940","architect_builder":"various builders, including several members of the Scott family","architectural_style":"Mid-Nineteenth Century; Late Victorian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Houses are described as in good condition, though some outbuildings have deteriorated; the former creamery is dilapidated or abandoned. The church remains in religious use and houses remain in domestic use.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.04289-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000037.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317245","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Kingston_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7009678"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/delaware-county/new-kingston-historic-district-08000037/"}
