The church was designed by Robert Gibson and completed in 1894, with its tower added in 1903.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is architecturally significant as a largely intact late-nineteenth-century Gothic Revival church by noted architect Robert Gibson, blending Gothic and Romanesque elements. It incorporates part of the earlier 1855 church and holds extensive Tiffany Studios work. The parish house is an intact example of Collegiate Gothic design in a dense urban setting.","narrative":"Christ Church occupies the southwest corner of East Avenue and Broadway on the east side of downtown Rochester. It is a large basilica-form church of rock-faced red Albion sandstone, with buttresses, flying buttresses, and a massive square bell tower. The parish began in 1854, and its first building went up in 1855. In 1883 the congregation commissioned English-born architect Robert Gibson to design a larger church. His design kept the earlier sanctuary and first nave bay as the north transept, and it combines heavy Romanesque masonry with simple Gothic window forms. The church opened in 1894, and the tower was completed in 1903. Inside, Tiffany Studios supplied stained glass, mosaic floors, a marble altar, and a mosaic reredos, many of them designed by Frederick Wilson. Ferris Hall, a Collegiate Gothic parish house with meeting rooms, classrooms, a theatre, and a gymnasium, opened in the 1920s. The church served as the diocesan cathedral from 1965 to 1976. It is recognized as a major example of Gibson's work.","period_of_significance":"1894-1924","architect_builder":"Robert Gibson (architect)","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; the form lists both historic and current function as religious.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.670024-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000024.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000024/a8c5afa06a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000024/a8c5afa06a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jfaust42","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rochester-NY-Christ-Church-Tower.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jfaust42</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rochester-NY-Christ-Church-Tower.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"79001589","name":"East Avenue Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/east-avenue-historic-district-79001589/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318780","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_Church_(Rochester,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5108760"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/christ-church-08000024/"}
