It balances Queen Anne massing with finely rendered classical details inside and out. It retains excellent integrity, including its original exterior materials and many interior finishes such as beadboard and mantels.","narrative":"Built in 1913 at the corner of Avent Ferry Road and Rex Road near New Hill, this two-and-a-half-story frame house blends two architectural styles. Its asymmetrical facade, tall pyramidal tin roof with intersecting gables, corbelled chimneys and turned porch balusters come from the Queen Anne tradition. Unfluted Doric columns, Palladian-derived windows and boxed cornice returns reflect the Colonial Revival. A wraparound porch and a double-height gabled porch front the house. Inside, a center hall plan, beadboard walls and ceilings, and a variety of mantels survive. Local carpenters Raymond Ausley and Lemmie Mann are named as builders. An engine house, smokehouse, washhouse, well house and pumphouse from around the same time stand behind the house and show how a rural household supplied its own water and processed its own food. The property was recognized for architecture because it keeps nearly all of its original exterior materials and many notable interior finishes, and it sits midway between simpler and more elaborate local examples of the style.","period_of_significance":"1913","architect_builder":"Raymond Ausley, local carpenter; Lemmie Mann, local carpenter and foreman","architectural_style":"Queen Anne; Colonial Revival (transitional Queen Anne-Colonial Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as a single dwelling in current use, with the same function historically; some alterations were made after 1991 by the current owner.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.558052-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/7185/47718573/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/07001503.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001503/49d4c878d0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001503/49d4c878d0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"KimWrenn","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Bartley_Holleman_House_NewHillHollemanRd_Wake_Co_NC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">KimWrenn</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Bartley_Holleman_House_NewHillHollemanRd_Wake_Co_NC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718573","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Bartley_Holleman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7410878"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/holleman-samuel-bartley-house-07001503/"}
