Mill #1 began in 1904 as part of a cotton bag factory, and Mill #2 followed around 1920. Later wings, dust collectors and a bridge section were added through the mid-twentieth century. The Southern Asbestos Manufacturing Company, organized in 1919, began operating here in 1920, and it was renamed Southern Asbestos Company in 1928. Thermoid Company of Trenton, New Jersey, bought a controlling interest in 1929. The plant became the largest producer of asbestos textiles, yarn, thread and cord in Mecklenburg County and an important local employer. Although tied to asbestos, its machinery and operations resembled those of other Charlotte textile mills. Asbestos manufacturing continued until 2001, when a developer bought the property. After extensive decontamination, rehabilitation began for arts and music uses, including a performance stage, a landscaped courtyard, new windows and loft-style offices.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian / Late Italianate","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant/not in use; the owner has begun rehabilitating the buildings for art galleries, recording studios and other arts and music uses, with offices installed in the upper level of Mill #2.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.681512-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/72/7213/47721372/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/07001500.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001500/9aba2cf4d4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001500/9aba2cf4d4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"James Willamor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southern_Asbestos_Company_Mills.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">James Willamor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southern_Asbestos_Company_Mills.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721372","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Asbestos_Company_Mills","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q21016208"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/mecklenburg-county/southern-asbestos-company-mills-07001500/"}
