It also cites the building's use as a one-room school for African American children and its role as the educational and religious center of the local community in the first half of the twentieth century.","narrative":"Built ca. 1920 near Brogden in Johnston County, North Carolina, Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church is a one-story, gable-front, three-bay frame building sheathed in weatherboards and set on brick piers. It has a metal roof, six-over-six windows and no ornament such as towers or stained glass, a form typical of rural Primitive Baptist churches of the period. The congregation, founded in 1878 by African American Primitive Baptists, received the land in 1879 from William A. Smith for a church, cemetery and school. The building also served as a one-room school for local African American children until the early 1930s, when bus transport to Princeton became available. The adjoining cemetery holds about forty marked graves and perhaps as many as 150 in total, with burials from 1910 to 1987. The church is regarded as an excellent local example of its type and as a record of African American education and worship in rural Johnston County.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1920-1957","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: Early twentieth-century rural ecclesiastical","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The building is described as structurally sound and well preserved; the congregation and current generation are working on its restoration and that of the cemetery.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.503806-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/86/7209/47720986/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/07001498.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720986","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiloh_Primitive_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7496737"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/johnston-county/shiloh-primitive-baptist-church-07001498/"}
