Mundie & Jensen designed both phases.","why_significant":"The building is presented as a major example of Chicago's shift from small, dim sweatshops to large, well-lit factories with better working conditions. Its Renaissance Revival design, terra cotta detail and enclosed clock and water tower also reflect the movement to improve the look of industrial architecture. The form describes its architectural integrity as substantial.","narrative":"Standing at the southeast corner of West Jackson Boulevard and South Peoria Street in Chicago, this ten-story loft was built in 1915-1916 as the office and factory of a leading men's clothing maker. Mundie & Jensen designed it in a restrained Renaissance Revival style, using light face brick, white and green terra cotta, and granite, over a steel frame fireproofed with concrete. A 1922 south addition by the same architects extended the building to 227 feet along Peoria Street. A clock tower enclosing a 15,000-gallon water tank rises from the north facade. Large windows and an open light court kept tailors within thirty feet of daylight, reflecting the move from cramped sweatshops to larger, safer factories. The design also echoes Chicago's effort to make industrial buildings more attractive. Replacement windows and removed rooftop crests have not greatly reduced its integrity. Today it is mostly vacant, with a restoration planned.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Mundie & Jensen, architects","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century / Commercial Style / Italian Renaissance Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Currently primarily vacant, partially used for commerce and offices; a restoration is planned, including removing metal siding from the tower.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.332838-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/8926/28892629/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/07001474.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001474/3de2c2e21c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001474/3de2c2e21c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Andrew Jameson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:International_Tailoring_Company_Building_Chicago_IL.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Jameson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:International_Tailoring_Company_Building_Chicago_IL.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892629","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Tailoring_Company_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6053828"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/international-tailoring-company-building-07001474/"}
