It is significant under Criterion C as a vernacular Greek Revival building that retains much of its historic fabric and period details despite later additions.","narrative":"Built around 1838 on Ocean Avenue in Lynbrook, this two-story frame house began as a modest vernacular Greek Revival farmhouse and grew over time. The roof was raised and a porch with decorative brackets was added around 1870 to 1883, a room was added at the northwest corner in the late nineteenth century, and a sun porch followed in 1946. Inside, the center-hall plan, early staircase, wide plank floors and original window moldings survive. On the grounds are a summer kitchen with a root cellar and a lattice-covered brick well house, both reflecting the property's farming origins; a 1949 garage is compatible but non-contributing. The house is notable as a rare surviving farmhouse from the village's early period. Farmland around it was sold off and became suburban neighborhoods in the early twentieth century, and the Luning family, who owned it from 1894 to 1946, kept the property largely intact. Its architecture and its place in that transformation led to its listing.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1838-1955","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a residence; the main house retains much historic fabric along with late-19th-century and 1946 additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.815741-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07001455.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001455/806e0e7b75-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001455/806e0e7b75-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_474_Ocean_Avenue,_Lynbrook-2.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_474_Ocean_Avenue,_Lynbrook-2.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319123","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_474_Ocean_Avenue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706441"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/house-at-474-ocean-avenue-07001455/"}
