Its restrained Neoclassical exterior and lavishly ornamented interior survive largely intact despite alterations made for vaudeville, silent films, talkies, 1940s and 1960 movie-house uses, and later performing arts use. A rare restored 1922 theater organ adds to its interest.","narrative":"Built in 1919 at 236 Washington Street, the Binghamton Theatre was designed by Brooklyn architect Herbert Brewster as a showcase for vaudeville acts and silent films. Its austere Neoclassical exterior combines a yellow Roman brick facade with cast-stone bands, a deep modillion cornice and large cartouches. The interior is far more ornate, with a coffered ceiling, a painted sixteen-section dome, Corinthian columns, and classical moldings. The theater was updated with Vitaphone sound in 1927, closed in 1931, reopened as a movie house in 1946 with an Art Deco marquee, and was remodeled in 1960 as the Capri movie house, which removed the box seats and some columns. A 1981 wing now serves as the entrance and lobby. Since the 1970s the building has operated as a performing arts center, and a restored 1922 theater organ is in working order. It is significant as a typical, well-preserved example of a modest-sized theater of its period.","period_of_significance":"1919-c1950","architect_builder":"Herbert Brewster","architectural_style":"Late 19th and early 20th century revivals (Neoclassical)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains a venue for the performing arts in Binghamton; the theater organ is fully operational.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.044666-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07001451.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001451/61e6a114a3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001451/61e6a114a3-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Ammodramus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Binghamton_Theatre_from_SW_3.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ammodramus</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Binghamton_Theatre_from_SW_3.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316547","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broome_County_Forum_Theatre","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4914251"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/broome-county/binghamton-theatre-07001451/"}
