Built in 1930 for African American children of the Covington area, it follows a Rosenwald Fund design for a two-teacher school, with a front-gable roof, a projecting Industrial Room wing, dual entries, brick stove flues and Craftsman brackets. A school had stood on the site since the nineteenth century, and a county board decision in 1929 approved funding for this building, which cost $2,000. Classes ended in 1947, when students moved to a consolidated school in Ellerbe, and the county sold the building in 1948. In the mid-1950s the county bought it back and turned it into the Covington Community Center, removing the partition between the classrooms. It is now one of only three known surviving Rosenwald schools in Richmond County and is listed for its links to black education and for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1930-1947","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Sold by the county in January 2006 to a private owner who plans to rehabilitate it as lodgings.
