It reflects commerce, industry, transportation, community planning, social history and Black ethnic heritage, with separate commercial, industrial, white and African-American residential areas.","narrative":"Rochelle is a south Georgia railroad town in Wilcox County, laid out on a gridiron plan after a rail line was built through the county in 1887. The historic district takes in its one-block brick commercial center along First Avenue, an industrial corridor of cotton and peanut warehouses beside the tracks, and two residential areas. The African-American neighborhood north of the railroad includes small houses, churches, a school, a social club and a cemetery. South of the tracks are larger wood-frame homes in Queen Anne, Craftsman and Colonial Revival styles, along with brick Classical Revival churches built in 1918. Landmarks include the Reid House hotel of 1896, the 1916 railroad depot and a 1962 post office. Postwar modern buildings and ranch houses reflect later growth. The district was recognized for its architecture and for how the railroad shaped commerce, industry, transportation and community life between 1887 and 1962.","period_of_significance":"1887-1962","architect_builder":"James J.
