It is a rare surviving side-gabled, wooden, one-room district school that keeps its original form and site. The nomination states it is the first such school individually listed in Massachusetts.","narrative":"Set on a sloping half-acre at the corner of Schoolhouse and Baker roads in southern Shutesbury, this small wooden schoolhouse was built around 1830 to serve one of the town's school districts. It is a 1½-story, side-gabled, clapboard building on a granite slab foundation, with a post-and-beam frame of mostly chestnut and simple Federal-style trim. Inside, it keeps the plan of a one-room school, with an entry hall, classroom and closet. The school operated until 1928, when the town closed it to save the cost of running three grammar schools. Pupils included children of Swedish immigrant families who settled nearby. It later became a dwelling and is now vacant. It is one of only two district schoolhouses left in town. A survey of comparable Massachusetts schools found side-gabled wooden examples with the entry on the long side to be rare, and the building remains on its original site.","period_of_significance":"ca 1830 to 1928","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal (vernacular Federal)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Converted to residential use after 1939; the form lists current function as vacant, with deteriorated wiring, no street power connection, and a dilapidated shed with a caved-in roof.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.841593-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/7951/63795139/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/07001312.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001312/d205e9a221-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001312/d205e9a221-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ShutesburyMA_SouthSchool_02.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ShutesburyMA_SouthSchool_02.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795139","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_School_(Shutesbury,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7568386"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/franklin-county/south-school-07001312/"}
