It stands on a limestone foundation built before 1813 and was rebuilt around 1867 after being burned in 1864.","why_significant":"The mill is argued to be an excellent example of a water-powered frame gristmill from the immediate post-Civil War period, with most of its late-19th-century flour-milling equipment intact. It also anchored the commercial life of the village of Lantz Mills (Criterion A, Industry). It retains its mill race and water rights, unlike most other mills in the county.","narrative":"Lantz Mill is a two-and-a-half-story frame gristmill on Stony Creek, two miles west of Edinburg, Virginia. Its limestone foundation dates to before 1813, probably built by Peter Holler. Union troops burned the original mill on October 7, 1864, during Sheridan's campaign in the Shenandoah Valley, and the present building was reconstructed around 1867 on the old foundation. The post-and-beam structure was first a stone-grinding mill and later converted to roller milling. It still holds late-1890s machinery by Barnard and Leas and the Wolf Company, including a plainsifter, along with an overshot waterwheel and wooden grain chutes. The mill race is the property's contributing structure. The mill served the village of Lantz Mills for 146 years, first under the Lantz family and later as Lantz Roller Mills and a feed mill, which closed in the late 1970s. Few other mills in the county retain such complete equipment, race and water rights, and the building is now vacant.","period_of_significance":"circa 1813-1957","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant, not in use. The mill dam was breached by 1956 and has not been repaired.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.062912-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/41/6836/41683641/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/07001145.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001145/e142da029c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001145/e142da029c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Kevin M.
