It is also an early Rosenwald model school built to a Community School plan with modest Craftsman detailing (Criterion C).","narrative":"Scrabble School is a one-story, seven-bay wood-frame schoolhouse in rural Rappahannock County, Virginia, built in 1921-1922 for African-American children in grades one through seven. It rests on a poured concrete foundation, is clad in rough-cast stucco, and has a side-gabled metal roof with a bracketed shed overhang over the central entrance. Inside, two classrooms could be joined by an accordion partition, and small cloak and activity rooms flank the vestibule. The school follows a two-teacher Community School plan from the Julius Rosenwald Fund. Funding of $3,225 came from the Rosenwald Fund, the black community, white contributors and public contributions, and the Grant family donated the two-acre site. Isaiah Wallace led the local effort. It was the first of four Rosenwald schools in the county and is the most intact. It retains its original floor plan, finishes and window pattern. The school closed in the late 1960s and has been vacant since, which helped preserve its interior features.","period_of_significance":"circa 1921-1957","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movement; Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant and not in use since the school closed; windows are boarded up, but the structure is reported to be in good overall condition.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.396-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/0/6789/41678900/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/07001143.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001143/478fc3df9a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001143/478fc3df9a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"self","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Scrabble_School,_oblique_view.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">self</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Scrabble_School,_oblique_view.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678900","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrabble_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15275738"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rappahannock-county/scrabble-school-07001143/"}
