It was built about 1851 for Joseph Williams and remodeled in 1897-1898.","why_significant":"The nomination argues local significance under Criterion C as an example of an evolved Second Empire-style dwelling. A tall mansard roof and Eastlake window lintels added in 1897-1898 gave an earlier hipped-roof house a fashionable look and extra usable space. Much of the historic fabric remains intact.","narrative":"Standing at the northwest corner of South Adams and Wythe Streets in Petersburg, this three-story brick house began about 1851 as a two-story, hipped-roof dwelling built for tobacco factory owner Joseph Williams. Its present appearance dates largely from 1897-1898, when merchant Charles Cohen added a full third story under a slate mansard roof, fitted Eastlake-style lintels to the windows and doorway, and remodeled the interior. Rear additions, including a two-story ell and a Craftsman-style sunroom, were completed probably around 1920. The mansard roof offered an economical way to gain living space and a current look without changing the plan. Several other Petersburg houses, mostly frame, were altered the same way. Commercial development has since surrounded the house, leaving it as the last dwelling of the former residential neighborhood. Neglect during the later twentieth century left the interior damaged, with most mantels missing. Renovation was underway when the property was listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1851- ca. 1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Second Empire","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and not in use, with the interior suffering from neglect; the house was being renovated at the time of the nomination.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.192382-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/6824/41682478/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/07001141.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001141/5fb01b7a2c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001141/5fb01b7a2c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AdamsWytheHouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AdamsWytheHouse.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100002886","name":"Halifax Triangle and Downtown Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/halifax-triangle-and-downtown-commercial-historic-district-100002886/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682478","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cohen_House_(Petersburg,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16890478"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/petersburg/cohen-house-07001141/"}
