It contains farms, dwellings, cemeteries, churches, mill sites and stone fences dating from the mid-18th to mid-20th century.","why_significant":"The district covers much of the former Manor of Leeds, part of Lord Fairfax's Northern Neck Proprietary, later bought by a syndicate led by John Marshall and his brother James. Limited development under manorial leasing and Marshall family ownership left a cohesive agricultural landscape of open pasture, historic roads, stone fences and farm complexes. The nomination argues the landscape and its mix of vernacular and high-style buildings illustrate about 250 years of rural land use.","narrative":"Spread across roughly 22,184 acres of foothill country in northwestern Fauquier County, this rural district is organized around Leeds Manor Road, near the village of Markham. Most of the land once belonged to the Manor of Leeds, laid off by Lord Fairfax in 1736 for his own use. In 1793 John Marshall, his brother James Markham Marshall and two brothers-in-law formed a syndicate to buy the manorial lands, and the Marshalls later built many Federal-style homes there. Because of the manor and the leasing system that followed, development stayed light. The district holds about 395 contributing resources, including farmhouses, barns, silos, family cemeteries, churches, schools, mill sites, historically African-American communities and long runs of stone fencing. Early log and stone settler dwellings stand beside Italianate, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival houses, though most buildings are vernacular. Open pasture, creeks and mountain ridges remain largely intact, and livestock and hay farming continue today.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mixed: Colonial hall-and-chamber, Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Classical Revival, American Foursquare, Bungalow/Craftsman, Ranch, I-house, and vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Agricultural uses such as cattle grazing, hay production and orcharding continue; farm buildings are described as in good condition due to continued use.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.475745-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/6805/41680588/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/07001138.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001138/7ef0aacdb4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001138/7ef0aacdb4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JOHN_MARSHALL%27S_LEEDS_MANOR_RURAL_HISTORIC_DISTRICT,_FAUQUIER_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680588","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Marshall%27s_Leeds_Manor_Rural_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712635"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fauquier-county/marshalls-john-leeds-manor-rural-historic-district-07001138/"}
