Parker, with an auditorium annex and other school outbuildings.","why_significant":"The school represents the move from scattered rural high schools to consolidated regional schools in early 20th-century Virginia. It was the second high school, and the largest wood frame school, in Cumberland County, and it ran a state-approved teacher training department from 1914. Its vernacular Classical Revival design and intact school complex also support its significance in architecture.","narrative":"Built in 1910 in the village of Hamilton, this two-story wood frame school replaced three one-room schools and opened with 112 pupils drawn from Cumberland, Goochland and Powhatan counties. It was financed through private subscriptions and state loans, and remains the largest wood frame school ever built in the county and its oldest surviving high school. A vernacular take on Classical Revival design, it has a slate-clad pedimented central bay, a bell cupola, and an entrance with Doric pilasters and diamond-paned sidelights. The school added a teacher training department in 1914 and later gained an auditorium, an agricultural classroom building and a home economics cottage. The auditorium hosted plays, lectures and concerts. It became an elementary school in 1944 and closed in 1964 when county schools were consolidated. Later uses included a furniture warehouse and gas station. The complex keeps a high degree of integrity, including original classroom wainscoting, slate chalkboards and a maple staircase.","period_of_significance":"1910 - 1944","architect_builder":"C.W. Dickinson (Cumberland County school superintendent)","architectural_style":"Classical Revival; Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The main building is in very good overall condition with little alteration. The former cafeteria building is now a single dwelling used as the owners' residence, and the school served as a furniture warehouse and gas station after closing in 1964.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.812243-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/6803/41680349/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/07001136.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001136/64b77bdaf2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001136/64b77bdaf2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hamilton_High_School_at_dusk,_Cartersville,_Virginia.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio di Nicolao</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hamilton_High_School_at_dusk,_Cartersville,_Virginia.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680349","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton_High_School_(Cartersville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5644988"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/cumberland-county/hamilton-high-school-07001136/"}
