It has a vernacular Gothic Revival chapel and receiving vault at its center.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the cemetery is an intact, distinctive example of a vernacular rural cemetery in Orleans County. It shows the influence of the nineteenth-century rural cemetery movement through its use of a hill, shaped grades, ornamental plantings and a picturesque chapel. Its monuments also reflect the prosperity of late-nineteenth-century Millville.","narrative":"Millville Cemetery occupies 7.5 acres on a pronounced hill beside East Shelby Road, about half a mile south of the hamlet of Millville in western Orleans County, New York. The Millville Cemetery Association was incorporated in 1871 to expand an early burying ground into a rural cemetery. A receiving vault of local red Medina sandstone was built into the hillside in 1875, and a square frame chapel with a cruciform roof and gable dormers was added above it in 1894. Parrish Brothers won the building contract with a bid of $448.50. Graveled and grassed drives cross the terraced slopes, conifers provide ornamental planting, and an iron archway on brick piers marks the entrance. Monuments range from simple marble slabs to obelisks, urns and a rare hexagonal Gothic Revival obelisk in white marble. The cemetery is recognized as an intact vernacular example of the rural cemetery movement and a record of the community's prosperity and aspirations.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1820-ca. 1955","architect_builder":"Joseph Caldwell; Parrish Brothers","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still functioning as a cemetery, with the chapel/office building and the roads and monuments largely intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.897173-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07001126.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001126/57859af9a7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001126/57859af9a7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Millville_Cemetery,_Millville,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Millville_Cemetery,_Millville,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320807","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millville_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6860121"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orleans-county/millville-cemetery-07001126/"}
