Tefft. It is a single-family dwelling with a two-story center pavilion and one-story wings.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C as a highly intact Greek Revival residence of the second quarter of the nineteenth century in Central New York. It is a nearly direct copy of the frontispiece elevation and first-floor plan in Minard Lafever's The Modern Builder's Guide (1833). Interior woodwork also follows details from Lafever's builders' guides.","narrative":"Set well back from North Street in the village of Marcellus, this brick Greek Revival house was built about 1835 for Dr. Lake I. Tefft, a local physician who later turned to farming. It rests on a high limestone basement and has a two-story center pavilion with a full-height portico, flanked by one-story wings. Its design follows the frontispiece of Minard Lafever's The Modern Builder's Guide, published in 1833, with only a few departures in the plan, such as the missing oval hall and niches. Interior trim, including the shouldered and battered architrave, also draws on Lafever's pattern books. A frame wing at the rear is thought to be older than the brick house. The portico was rebuilt from a historic photograph using original stone scattered in the yard. The house is valued as a highly intact, close translation of a published architectural design into a Central New York village residence.","period_of_significance":"c.1835","architect_builder":"Minard Lafever's The Modern Builder's Guide (1833)","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; the portico was recently restored from a nineteenth-century photograph, and the house was recently occupied and fully functional.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.636041-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07001125.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001125/04d3956bae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001125/04d3956bae-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Crazyale","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tefft_house.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Crazyale</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tefft_house.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320469","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tefft-Steadman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7694627"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/tefft-steadman-house-07001125/"}
