It also reflects the club's long role in Bronxville's social, cultural and educational life (Criterion A). The building is described as highly intact inside and out, and as the finest work of its architect.","narrative":"Built in 1927-28 at 135 Midland Avenue in Bronxville, this Colonial Revival clubhouse was designed by local architect Penrose V. Stout for the village's women's club. Constructed of stuccoed brick on a concrete foundation, it is T-shaped and set into a steeply sloping 1.2-acre lot. The front section has a symmetrical central pavilion with French doors, Ionic pilasters, a slate gable roof, chimneys and dormers. Behind it, a double-height ballroom and auditorium extends down the slope. Inside are a tiled foyer with a fountain, a pine-paneled lounge, a tea room and a raised stage. The building was meant to serve the women of the village and act as a cultural center. Over time it hosted musicians, art exhibits, lectures, wedding receptions and dance lessons, and the club has published a magazine, The Villager, since 1928. It is recognized for its architecture and its social role, and remains highly intact.","period_of_significance":"1927-28","architect_builder":"Stout, Penrose V.","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a clubhouse; described as highly intact on the exterior and interior from its date of construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.061332-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07001041.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001041/345638658d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001041/345638658d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bronxville_Womens_Club_cloudy_PM_jeh.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bronxville_Womens_Club_cloudy_PM_jeh.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322973","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronxville_Women%27s_Club","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4974216"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/bronxville-womens-club-07001041/"}
