Fowler. The property is also tied to inventor Linus Yale, Sr., who built the house for his daughter Chlotilda and operated the lock shop beside it. The lock shop remains are an industrial archaeological site likely to yield information on 19th century lock manufacturing.","narrative":"Built around 1849 on the north edge of Newport, this octagonal limestone house was a gift from lock inventor Linus Yale, Sr. to his daughter Chlotilda and her husband Ira Cady. Its eight-sided plan follows the ideas Orson S. Fowler promoted in 1848, with rooms arranged around a central stair rising to a cupola. Random ashlar walls, bracketed eaves, bay windows and a recessed two-story entrance porch give it a Picturesque and Italianate character. Inside, most original fir floors, woodwork, plaster and stove-heated rooms survive, and no additions have altered the original footprint. Next to the house lie the remains of the Yale Lock Shop, a limestone workshop operating by 1847 and powered by water from Knight's Brook. Little masonry remains, but the site may reveal how 19th century locks were made. Together, the house and site were recognized for architecture, industry and archaeological potential.","period_of_significance":"c. 1847-c. 1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Octagon Mode; Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["A","C","D"],"status_note":"The house is a single dwelling undergoing restoration; the lock shop survives only as footings and small portions of foundation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.661092-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07001019.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001019/ed584c6467-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001019/ed584c6467-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Octavia Graystone","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yale-Cady_4July2008.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Octavia Graystone</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yale-Cady_4July2008.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318206","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yale-Cady_Octagon_House_and_Yale_Lock_Factory_Site","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8047326"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/yale-cady-octagon-house-and-yale-lock-factory-site-07001019/"}
