It also reflects the city's industrial history, including button, silk, piano, and shoe manufacturing.","narrative":"Built in 1879-1880 on Logan Street in Auburn, New York, this brick industrial complex was designed to house the Auburn Button Works, founded by John H. Woodruff, and later the Logan Silk Mills. The mill, of heavy timber construction with load-bearing masonry walls, originally formed an L-shaped building, and an east wing added by 1882 made it U-shaped. Corbelled brickwork decorates the roofline, and large 12-over-12 windows with segmental brick hoodmolds mark the front. Logan Silk Mills supplied the silk for the gown Caroline Harrison wore at her husband's 1889 inauguration, but it closed in 1890. The Wegman Piano Company then occupied the site until bankruptcy in 1915. A fire on May 1, 1914 destroyed the west wing's third story and led to its separation from the main block. Later tenants made automotive supplies, shoes, and marine hardware. The complex is valued as a rare surviving Italianate industrial building in Auburn.","period_of_significance":"1879-1950","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th Century Revival: vernacular Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant, though the first floor of the west wing still houses a machine shop and parts of the main floor have been used for a recording studio and rehearsal hall; windows are boarded up.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.88362-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07001014.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001014/3167a1de35-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07001014/3167a1de35-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Auburn_Button_Works_and_Logan_Silk_Mills.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Auburn_Button_Works_and_Logan_Silk_Mills.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316683","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auburn_Button_Works_and_Logan_Silk_Mills","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4819250"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/auburn-button-works-and-logan-silk-mills-07001014/"}
