It was designed by noted local architect Henry H. Meyers. It was the first of Meyers's ten veterans' memorial buildings to show Moderne influence and is one of the earliest Art Deco buildings in Alameda.","narrative":"Completed in 1929 at the northeast corner of Central Avenue and Walnut Street, this two-story veterans' memorial building anchors Alameda's civic area. It is built of reinforced concrete with a stucco finish, combining Spanish Colonial Revival form with Art Deco ornament. A projecting entry pavilion with three tall arches rises above a red brick staircase and carries relief medallions dated for the Spanish-American War, Civil War and World War I. Inside, a foyer with chevron-patterned glazed tiles leads to a deeply coffered auditorium about 65 feet square. Other spaces include a fireside lounge, lodge rooms and a basement dining room. A 1949 addition added an east wing, billiards and assembly rooms and an elevator. Architect Henry H. Meyers designed it as one of ten veterans' memorial buildings he produced in the East Bay. Its listing recognises it as a good local example of Moderne and Art Deco design and an early use of the style in Alameda. Several veterans' groups still meet there.","period_of_significance":"1929-1949","architect_builder":"Meyers, Henry H.","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals - Spanish Colonial Revival with Art Deco details","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a meeting hall and theatre/auditorium; the 1949 east wing, a 1977 handicapped ramp and a 2001 fire escape were later alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.758746-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/07000995.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000995/f918e6777c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000995/f918e6777c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Veterans_Memorial_Building_(Alameda,_CA)_2_(cropped).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Veterans_Memorial_Building_(Alameda,_CA)_2_(cropped).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858139","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alameda_Veterans%27_Memorial_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123220826"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/alameda-county/alameda-veterans-memorial-building-07000995/"}
