It began as a Greek Revival residence, likely built after 1837, and was renovated in 1916 to designs by Syracuse architect Ward Wellington Ward.","why_significant":"The house is significant for its architecture as an intact, representative example of Ward Wellington Ward's residential work, and as one of his renovations of an earlier house. It keeps its form, materials and detailing inside and out, and it falls within the context of Ward's Syracuse architecture from 1908 to 1932.","narrative":"This two-story brick house at 2627 East Genesee Street in Syracuse stands at the junction of East Genesee Street, formerly the Old Genesee Road, and Salt Springs Road. It began as a Greek Revival residence with a three-bay main block and a side wing, probably built after 1837 in what was then rural Dewitt. Early-twentieth-century newspaper accounts say it was once slated for demolition to make way for a city park, but that plan was not carried out. Around 1916 it passed to Harry N. Burhans, a hardware and builders' supply executive, who hired architect Ward Wellington Ward to remodel it. Ward added a matching north wing, removed the old porches, adjusted the windows for symmetry, and reworked the interior with Colonial Revival detail, Mercer tile fireplaces and Arts and Crafts touches in the kitchen. A brick garage sits at the rear of the lot. The house is listed as an intact example of Ward's residential work.","period_of_significance":"c.1837; 1916","architect_builder":"Ward Wellington Ward","architectural_style":"Greek Revival; Colonial Revival; Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling and described as meticulously maintained by its current owner.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.096404-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07000868.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000868/30d9f99430-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000868/30d9f99430-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BurhansHarryHs1sm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BurhansHarryHs1sm.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314051","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_N._Burhans_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5671237"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/burhans-harry-n-house-07000868/"}
