It is also significant for its association with Orrin W. Burritt, a leading local businessman, inventor, builder of an opera house and village official.","narrative":"Built around 1876 on Van Buren Street in Weedsport, this two-story frame house combines Italianate and Queen Anne styling. Projecting bay windows, large cross gables, balconies and chamfered corners with turret-like forms give it an asymmetrical profile, while broad eaves with scroll brackets, dentils and modillions, and a deep verandah with turned balustrades supply the ornament. A Colonial Revival porte cochere was added about 1912, and a carriage house of the original period survives behind the house. Inside, the original room layout and Victorian woodwork remain, including molded trim, wainscoting, a carved open staircase and two Eastlake-inspired fireplace surrounds. The house was built for Orrin W. Burritt, a hardware merchant who held patents for roof-seaming machines, built an opera house, printed a newspaper, helped found the rural cemetery and served as village president. It was listed for its architecture and for its link to Burritt's role in the village's commerce, industry, politics and culture.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1876 - ca. 1912","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th century: Italianate/Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the only noted change is the loss of the original Second Empire style tower above the main entrance.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.306693-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07000864.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000864/585cc42375-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000864/585cc42375-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 4.0","author":"Dj paige","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Orrin_W_Burritt_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dj paige</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Orrin_W_Burritt_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316689","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orrin_W._Burritt_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7104091"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/burritt-orrin-w-house-07000864/"}
