It is tied to the wine-making industry and its effect on St. Helena's development, and to John Ramos, a significant figure in California sherry-making. It is one of only two in-town sherry-making facilities and represents the vernacular stone sherry house building type.","narrative":"Two connected buildings on Railroad Avenue in St. Helena, beside the railroad tracks, make up this property. The Ramos Sherry House is a two-story, hip-roofed box of local trachytic tuff, now stuccoed, built in 1880-83 for wine-making. Next to it stands the Depot Saloon, with a stone first floor and a wood-frame second floor, joined to the Sherry House by small additions, one of which predates 1899. A small garage of probably 1930s date also sits on the parcel. John Ramos, born on Madeira in 1816, built the sherry house to bake wine in oak tanks, producing 20,000-gallon batches in the early 1880s. Financial trouble led to a sheriff's sale in 1883. The building is valued for its simple vernacular form, massing and masonry, and for its link to sherry-making and the railroad-era growth of St. Helena. Its brick chimney is the one surviving piece of the original sherry-making process.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"John Ramos (original owner and builder of the sherry house)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"Buildings are in use as offices; the Sherry House stucco is deteriorated and the sherry-making equipment is gone except for the brick chimney.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.561308-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/07000849.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000849/40db8c59a8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000849/40db8c59a8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Eugene Zelenko","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USA-St._Helena-John_Ramos_Sherry_House-Depot_Saloon-1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Eugene Zelenko</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USA-St._Helena-John_Ramos_Sherry_House-Depot_Saloon-1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860080","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133308786"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/napa-county/ramos-john-sherry-house-depot-saloon-07000849/"}
