Its log core dates to the mid-18th century, with later stone, frame and kitchen additions.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance under Criterion A for the farm's role in mid-18th-century settlement of northern Virginia through the land patent system and its continuous agricultural use into the 20th century. Under Criterion C, it is significant as a well-preserved farmhouse showing Colonial, Federal and Virginia vernacular building styles. The 16 by 20 foot log section is considered a rare surviving 'Land Patent House' in Loudoun County.","narrative":"Home Farm is a farmhouse on 8.7 acres beside a pond on Sycolin Creek, southwest of the intersection of U.S. Route 15 and Mount Gilead Road near Leesburg. The L-shaped house grew over about two hundred years. It began as a mid-18th-century two-pen log cabin measuring 16 by 20 feet, a size typical of land patent requirements. Around 1810 a fieldstone addition was built by Quaker George Nixon, and about 1830 Peter Cost added a Federal-style frame section with scroll brackets and a geometric frieze. A kitchen wing followed around 1930. Outbuildings include a henhouse, a fieldstone wall and a springhouse foundation topped by a relocated log cabin. The farm is recognized for its role in the settlement of northern Virginia and its long agricultural history on the old Carolina Road corridor, and for its layered architecture. Few land patent houses from the settlement period survive in Loudoun County.","period_of_significance":"circa 1757 - 1957","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial; Early Republic: Federal; Other: Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function is domestic (single dwelling with secondary structure); the property is described as well preserved and was rehabilitated in the 1980s.
