The house was built in four phases beginning circa 1833, with its Greek Revival main block dating to circa 1846.","why_significant":"The nomination argues Green Garden is locally significant as one of Loudoun County's most exceptional examples of the Greek Revival style from the mid-1840s. Its detailing includes a Doric porch, a decorative attic frieze with carved wood screens, and an elaborate entrance. Its frieze windows are rare in Northern Virginia. The property also reflects the history of a mill-area farm and its owners.","narrative":"Green Garden is a brick farmhouse on a rise above Green Garden Road and Pantherskin Creek, just north of Upperville in southern Loudoun County. The dwelling grew in four phases. A one-and-a-half-story house was built around 1833 for a mill manager, Jesse Richards. Dr. Bushrod Rust began the five-bay, two-story Greek Revival main block in 1846 and died the following year. A rear ell followed around 1856, and further additions came in 1921. The main block follows a center-hall plan, with a stretcher-bond brick facade, a three-bay Doric porch, a transom-and-sidelight entrance, and carved wood screens set into the attic frieze. Interior woodwork includes reeded surrounds, bull's-eye corner blocks, and matching Greek Revival mantels. The 34.30-acre property also holds a root cellar, smokehouse, barn, garage/office and ice house site. The nomination presents the house as one of Loudoun County's most exceptional examples of mid-1840s Greek Revival architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Jesse Richards, former mill manager, built the original circa 1833 house; Dr. Bushrod Rust initiated the 1846 main block","architectural_style":"Early Republic (Vernacular); Mid-19th Century Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Historic and current functions are listed as single dwelling, secondary structures, agricultural field and animal facility, indicating continued domestic and agricultural use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.30308-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/6815/41681539/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/07000769.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000769/248b36227b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000769/248b36227b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GreenGarden_LoudounCounty.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GreenGarden_LoudounCounty.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"11000835","name":"Unison Battlefield Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/unison-battlefield-historic-district-11000835/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681539","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Garden_(Upperville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712390"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/loudoun-county/green-garden-07000769/"}
