The house was built c. 1767 and expanded c. 1775-85 for Cadwallader Colden Jr.","why_significant":"The site is argued to be significant as the core of the Coldenham estate, which Cadwallader Colden Jr. developed from the one his father established. It also has potential to yield archaeological information on the Colden family's occupancy and on period building technology, techniques and materials. It is nominated at the state level.","narrative":"Only a partial shell remains of the Colden Mansion, a two-story Georgian house of locally quarried limestone in Montgomery, Orange County. Builders James, Gabriel and Wines Many raised the first section around 1767 for Cadwallader Colden Jr., and a second section was added between about 1775 and 1785. A mansard roof was added in the later 19th century. The house was abandoned in the 1930s during estate litigation and then collapsed into ruin. Surviving walls include eight fireplace stacks, one chimney with brick flues, and a bake oven. Some interior woodwork was removed and survives elsewhere, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The wooded 8.5-acre site also holds foundations of a summer kitchen, a possible earlier dwelling, two barns, a privy, wells, a cistern and a suspected slave cemetery. The property represents the center of the Coldenham estate and may yield further archaeological and construction information.","period_of_significance":"c. 1744 - c. 1940","architect_builder":"Many, Gabriel; Many, James; Many, Wines","architectural_style":"Georgian (Architectural Classification listed as N/A)","criteria":["A","B","D"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant/not in use; the house was abandoned in the 1930s and has decayed to a partial shell of standing walls.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.168929-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07000758.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000758/b573195d99-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000758/b573195d99-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Colden_Mansion_Ruins.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Colden_Mansion_Ruins.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320610","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colden_Mansion_Ruins","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5142507"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/colden-mansion-ruins-07000758/"}
