It also shows transitional Federal/Greek Revival architecture. It recalls Oak Orchard's past as a manufacturing and transportation center along the historic Ridge Road.","narrative":"Standing on a slight rise at the corner of Ridge Road and Oak Orchard River Road, this two-story cobblestone building began as a large stagecoach tavern in the 1830s. Its L-shaped plan has four- and seven-bay wings, a hipped roof with stepped parapets, and Medina sandstone quoins, sills and lintels. Inside, a broad stair hall retains its original newel post and balustrade, and simple Greek Revival trim survives throughout. The first floor held an unusually large dining room and smaller parlors, while an apartment at the rear of the upper floor likely housed the owner or manager. Its size and finish suggest it ranked among the better taverns on Ridge Road, a busy route for westward settlers. It is one of eight cobblestone buildings in the town and is believed to be the largest in the state. After traffic shifted to railroads, it later served as a destination restaurant between the World Wars and into the mid-twentieth century. It is now one of the few buildings left in the hamlet.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1835 - ca. 1930","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (described as transitional Federal/Greek Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic uses were restaurant and hotel; current functions are listed as specialty store and single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.822191-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07000755.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000755/2b692240e9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000755/2b692240e9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cobblestone_Inn,_Oak-Orchard-on-the-Ridge,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cobblestone_Inn,_Oak-Orchard-on-the-Ridge,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314247","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobblestone_Inn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5138820"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orleans-county/cobblestone-inn-07000755/"}
