Its curving streets, castle-themed street names and mix of revival styles set it apart from the grid pattern of the rest of the city. Most houses show few alterations and keep their character-defining features. The form considers it locally significant.","narrative":"Castle Heights is a residential neighborhood of curving streets about three miles southwest of downtown Waco, Texas. It was platted in the early 1920s near the Cottonland Castle, a stone Gothic Revival mansion begun in 1890, and street names such as Castle, Chateau and Carondolet continue that theme. The district contains 181 contributing and 47 noncontributing resources, mostly single dwellings and their garages or outbuildings. Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, Mediterranean and Classical Revival houses appear alongside later Ranch and Minimal Traditional homes from the 1940s and 1950s. More than half of the homes were built by about 1948, and most have had few alterations. Unlike many earlier Waco neighborhoods, most houses had garages, reflecting the area's affluence and its distance from downtown. Irregular lots follow natural contours, and two traffic islands add to the setting. The district was listed for its intact collection of early- to mid-twentieth century housing and its distinct planning and architecture within the city.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Gothic; Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals (Colonial Revival, Classical Revival, Tudor Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, Mediterranean); Bungalow; Ranch; Minimal Traditional","criteria":[],"status_note":"Houses remain in residential use; contributing properties retain a high level of character-defining features and most show few alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.751016-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/9729/40972991/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/07000495.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972991","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q109999825"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/mclennan-county/castle-heights-historic-district-07000495/"}
