It is significant locally in social history, through its role in Oroville's library development, and in architecture, as an example of William H. Weeks's temple-style Carnegie designs.","narrative":"Oroville's Carnegie library, built in 1912 at 1675 Montgomery Street, is a small two-story temple-style building in the Classical Revival manner. Concrete walls faced with smooth cement, a pedimented portico with Greek columns, and a stair to the entry give it a monumental look for its size. Architect William Henry Weeks designed it and Frank Sullivan built it, using a $10,000 Carnegie grant received in 1911. The town's library tradition reaches back to an 1859 mining-town library, and Senator George Perkins donated an office building and later the property for library use before the city took ownership in 1907. The building is one of eighteen surviving temple-style Carnegie libraries of its kind in California and one of seven temple-style designs by Weeks. A 1937 WPA restoration mostly affected the interior. The building was vacant at the time of listing, with renovation underway to meet accessibility requirements.","period_of_significance":"1912-1956","architect_builder":"Weeks, William Henry; Frank Sullivan constructed it","architectural_style":"Classical Revival - Late 19th and 20th Century Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant at the time of nomination; renovation was under way to meet ADA requirements, with public reopening expected in the near future.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.672909-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/07000405.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000405/8ddb89c576-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000405/8ddb89c576-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Ammodramus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oroville,_California_law_library_from_NW_1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Ammodramus</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oroville,_California_law_library_from_NW_1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857360","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oroville_Carnegie_Library","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q85791270"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/butte-county/oroville-carnegie-library-07000405/"}
