Trustees received the land by deed in March 1896, and the front-gabled building went up that year. A bell tower with Gothic lancet openings and a tin fixture at its peak is its most distinctive feature. Around 1920 a rear transept was added, giving the building a T-shape. The church drew its members from local farming families and followed the black Baptist tradition of home missionary work and Sunday school instruction. It also served as the home church of Rev. Noel C. Taylor, who later became Roanoke's first black mayor and returned to preach at annual homecomings. The congregation dwindled, and the building was leased to another congregation by 1993, but it remains in religious use. It is recognized for its role in the religious and ethnic history of the county's African American community.","period_of_significance":"1896-1957","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Still used as a church; services are held on the first and third Sundays of the month, and the interior is described as in good condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.150818-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/74/6797/41679774/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/07000392.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000392/12139a6361-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000392/12139a6361-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Olive_Branch_Baptist_Church2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Olive_Branch_Baptist_Church2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679774","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olive_Branch_Missionary_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7087138"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/bedford/olive-branch-missionary-baptist-church-07000392/"}
