The original one-story house was built ca. 1904 and was enlarged and remodeled in 1939 by its owner, Dr. Evan Alexander Erwin.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C for architecture as an example of the later phase of Neoclassical Revival style, typical of houses built after 1925, with a side-gable form and slender Tuscan columns. It is one of only a few Neoclassical Revival houses in Laurinburg and one of a dwindling number of historic houses on increasingly commercialized South Main Street.","narrative":"Located on South Main Street about five blocks south of downtown Laurinburg, this house began around 1904 as a one-story frame dwelling with a wraparound porch, built by contractor William D. Tucker for Robert Rowe Covington. Physician Dr. Evan Alexander Erwin bought it in 1918 and in 1939 enlarged and remodeled it, adding a second story, flanking one-story wings, and a full-height porch with slender Tuscan columns. The five-bay front has a central door with leaded-glass sidelights and an elliptical fanlight. The result reflects the later phase of Neoclassical Revival design, with side-gable roofs and simple columns, and resembles Mount Vernon in its symmetry and flat-roofed portico. Only two other examples of the style are noted in Laurinburg, both from earlier decades. A ca. 1939 garage also contributes. The surrounding area has shifted from residential to commercial use, which makes the house a rare survivor along South Main Street. It was undergoing rehabilitation when documented.","period_of_significance":"1939","architect_builder":"Unknown (original ca. 1904 house built by master carpenter and contractor William D. Tucker)","architectural_style":"Classical Revival (Neoclassical Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Undergoing substantial rehabilitation, with new siding replicating the original weatherboards, a new roof, and a modernized kitchen and bathrooms. Current function is listed as work in progress.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.511237-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/7222/47722229/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/07000353.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000353/6c2e0928a5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000353/6c2e0928a5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Evan_Alexander_Erwin_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Evan_Alexander_Erwin_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722229","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Evan_Alexander_Erwin_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19946169"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/scotland-county/erwin-dr-evan-alexander-house-07000353/"}
