It also holds stained glass windows by D. Maitland Armstrong, Helen Maitland Armstrong and John LaFarge, and no other documented Armstrong-LaFarge collaboration in Ohio is known.","narrative":"Built in 1892 at 3416 Clifton Avenue in Cincinnati, this limestone church blends Gothic and Romanesque Revival styles. Its asymmetrical front includes a 52-foot square entrance tower with a pyramidal slate roof and a smaller cylindrical tower. Inside, the sanctuary is wider than it is deep and joins a polygonal Sunday school space in the Akron plan, designed by Charles Crapsey's firm, Crapsey & Brown. Hammer-beam trusses support a high oak ceiling, and a Koehnken & Grimm pipe organ dates from 1895. The building is especially notable for its stained glass. The west windows, dedicated in 1895, are by D. Maitland Armstrong and his daughter Helen. The east windows are attributed to John LaFarge on the basis of studio account books and physical evidence. Buttresses were added in 1985 to stabilize bulging walls, and a 1961 addition wraps the east side while leaving the original church largely intact. The church remains in religious use.","period_of_significance":"1892-1895","architect_builder":"Crapsey & Brown Architects; Charles Crapsey, Building Supervisor","architectural_style":"Unified composition of Gothic & Romanesque Revival; Akron plan","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility (Clifton United Methodist Church); buttresses were added in 1985 and an education addition in 1961.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.251255-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/07000297.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000297/b3823946a1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000297/b3823946a1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Greg5030","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CliftonMethodistEpiscopal.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Greg5030</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CliftonMethodistEpiscopal.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989023","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138349114"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/clifton-methodist-episcopal-church-07000297/"}
