It shares a small fenced parcel with a contributing two-door privy.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an outstanding example of a modest mid-19th-century Greek Revival one-room schoolhouse (Criterion C). It also qualifies under Criterion A because it served as a school from construction until it closed in 1951, and it retains a high degree of original character inside and out.","narrative":"Stone Arabia School, also called District Number 6, is a small clapboard schoolhouse on the north side of Route 31 in Cicero, built around 1854. It measures about 30 by 25 feet, with a vestibule wing and coal shed at the northeast corner. Greek Revival details include a stone foundation, wide wood water table, corner boards, cornice returns and side entablatures. Six-over-six windows on the sides appear original, while large multi-light windows on the front were probably added to bring in more daylight. Inside are beaded-board walls and ceiling, blackboards, an iron stove and a hardwood floor probably laid in the early twentieth century. The school taught local children until it closed in 1951. It was nearly moved to North Syracuse but was donated to the Cicero Historical Society, which runs it as a museum. It was listed for its intact architecture and its role in the town's education history. A two-door privy on the site also contributes.","period_of_significance":"c.1854-1951","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Owned by the Cicero Historical Society and operated as a museum furnished with old school desks, chairs, classroom artifacts and books.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.691428-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07000289.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000289/f6bfe6c4bc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000289/f6bfe6c4bc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Crazyale","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stone_arabia_school.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Crazyale</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stone_arabia_school.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320461","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Arabia_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7618854"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/stone-arabia-school-07000289/"}
