It began as a one-and-a-half-story house built in the 1790s and was enlarged in the early and mid-1800s.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an important example of vernacular architecture, combining folk and academic elements from several styles. Its additions, especially the 1846 block, show Early National and Gothic Revival influences. It retains a high degree of integrity for its period of significance, and it is locally significant under Criterion C.","narrative":"Eubank Hall is a frame farmhouse on a 141-acre property near Fort Mitchell, Lunenburg County, Virginia. It grew in stages. The first part, a one-room house with a brick basement and a large exterior chimney, was probably built in the 1790s by John T. Eubank, a Revolutionary War veteran and farmer. A two-story addition followed before 1846. In that year William Henry Eubank received the house as a wedding gift and, according to family tradition, added a three-story block with a hipped roof and two Jacobean-style chimneys, each with three hexagonal flues. The interior plan and many original features survive, including paneled wainscoting, hand-hewn beams and fireplace surrounds. The house is significant as vernacular architecture, blending folk building traditions with Early National and Gothic Revival elements. Its period of significance runs from about 1790 to 1860. The property also holds a kitchen foundation and two modern equipment sheds, and the Eubank family has owned it for over 150 years.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1790-1860","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial/Southern Colonial; Mid-19th Century/Early National; Mid-19th Century/Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Continuously occupied as a single-family dwelling for most of its existence; the front porch is partly dismantled.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.541726-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/6817/41681723/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/07000233.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000233/962e357631-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000233/962e357631-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lunenburg_Eubank_Hall.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lunenburg_Eubank_Hall.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681723","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eubank_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712296"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/lunenburg-county/eubank-hall-07000233/"}
