The core was built circa 1803 and was enlarged in the nineteenth century, with several outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that the house shows a vernacular original section with later Federal-style detailing inside and out, and that many nineteenth-century outbuildings survive. It is also tied to William Macon Waller (1789-1849), a landowner, county official and state delegate, and was the center of his large agricultural holdings.","narrative":"Forest Hill is a two-story frame house on a knoll at the foot of the mountains near Lowesville, Amherst County, Virginia, surrounded by about 220 acres of pasture once used for tobacco. The original section, built around 1803 or earlier, was a vernacular hall-parlor dwelling. After acquiring the land in 1816, William Macon Waller enlarged it with two-story additions, and the house keeps Federal-style detailing, including a fluted-pilaster entrance, a lunette window, and a parlor with faux wood-grained mantel and wainscoting. Original window sashes with wooden pegs survive. Outbuildings include a log smokehouse from about 1800, a log crib barn, a corncrib, a tenant house, a tobacco barn and a tool shed. Waller served as a justice of the peace, school commissioner, delegate to the Virginia House of Delegates and county sheriff. The Waller family held the farm until 1921. The property was recognized for its architecture and for its link to Waller.","period_of_significance":"1800-1921","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other (vernacular hall-parlor I-house with Federal-style detailing)","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still a private single dwelling and working cattle farm; several outbuildings are deteriorated or partly collapsed, and the owners have protected the land through conservation easements.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.448238-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/6795/41679551/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/07000218.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000218/89ec658751-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000218/89ec658751-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Forest_Hill_with_the_Blue_Ridge_behind.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Forest_Hill_with_the_Blue_Ridge_behind.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679551","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forest_Hill_(Amherst,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712325"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/amherst-county/forest-hill-07000218/"}
