Its walls are laid in Flemish bond with glazed headers, and bricks above two doors are etched \"R T 1750\" and \"M T 1750\" for Robert and Mary Tynes. Inside, a center-passage plan, hand-hewn pegged rafters numbered with Roman numerals, and a basement kitchen survive. A smokehouse, a kitchen chimney and foundation, a boxwood garden with a well, and a chicken house stand on the 1.3-acre site beside Holly Creek. The house is considered a rare intact example of its form in Isle of Wight County. It is also tied to Robert's son Timothy Tynes, who held more than four thousand acres. In his 1802 will he freed eighty-one enslaved people and left them land, which led to African American communities in the county. The site was recognized for this history and for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1750-1802","architect_builder":"Tynes, Robert-builder","architectural_style":"COLONIAL: Georgian (Tidewater Gambrel form)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with secondary structures; a circa 1950 addition, expanded in the 1970s, is attached to the west side.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.842076-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/6813/41681344/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/07000194.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000194/0b233d4516-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000194/0b233d4516-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robert_Tynes_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio di Nicolao</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robert_Tynes_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681344","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Tynes_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713145"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/isle-of-wight-county/tynes-robert-house-07000194/"}
