A mid-19th-century wood frame wing and a former carriage barn extend from the rear.","why_significant":"The house is presented as a distinguished, largely intact example of transitional Federal/Greek Revival residential architecture in Hoosick, with finely crafted interior and exterior detail. It is also associated with early settlement of the area. It was the home of Gideon Reynolds, a prominent Rensselaer County political figure who served in Congress and attended the 1860 Republican convention.","narrative":"Set back from South Street in the hamlet of Hoosick, this red brick house was built around 1825 on the remaining 8 acres of the original Breese farm. It has five bays, a center hall plan, stepped parapets at the gable ends, and a doorway with fluted Doric columns and a fanlight transom. Inside are a curving staircase, wide pine floors, and eight mantels, no two alike, drawn from Federal and early Greek Revival forms. A basement kitchen keeps its cooking hearth, crane and bake oven. A wood wing and former carriage barn were added at the rear by about 1875. The property is significant for its architecture, which reflects the pattern-book classicism of Asher Benjamin, and for its link to early settlement. Thomas Reynolds bought the farm around 1836, and his son Gideon Reynolds, a state legislator, sheriff and congressman, lived here through much of his political career.","period_of_significance":"circa 1825-1875","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal-Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Remains a private single residence, preserved as a notable architectural landmark.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.993008-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/07000096.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000096/3e7b53f4fc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000096/3e7b53f4fc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoosickNY_BreeseReynoldsHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HoosickNY_BreeseReynoldsHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321181","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breese-Reynolds_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4960319"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rensselaer-county/breese-reynolds-house-07000096/"}
