It is the only high Gothic Revival church in the new James City and is larger and more ornate than the other brick church there. It is also tied to a congregation founded in 1863 by Reverend Hurley Grimes.","narrative":"Mount Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church is a red brick Gothic Revival building at 307 Scott Street in James City, south of New Bern. Built around 1924, it has a front-gable form, a tall corner bell tower with a pierced parapet, lancet-arched windows, and corbelled brick panels marking each bay. Inside, a tin-sheathed ceiling with a broken pitch suggests a Gothic arch, and a tiered balcony holds pews moved from the congregation's first church. Samuel Chapman Elliott, a local house carpenter and longtime deacon, built and most likely designed it. The congregation, founded in 1863 by Reverend Hurley Grimes, moved from old James City to the newer Brownsville section, using bricks from a sawmill drying kiln. The church is regarded as a strong local example of brick Gothic Revival design and the only high Gothic Revival church in the community. A 1970s addition at the rear holds classrooms and a dining area. The church remains in religious use.","period_of_significance":"1924","architect_builder":"Elliott, Samuel Chapman (builder)","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a religious facility; a mid-1970s rear addition houses classrooms, a kitchen and a dining area.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.624039-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/7197/47719714/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/07000093.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000093/f7ed58a1f8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/07000093/f7ed58a1f8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MountShilohMBChurch_5866.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MountShilohMBChurch_5866.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719714","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Shiloh_Missionary_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6923608"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/craven-county/mount-shiloh-missionary-baptist-church-07000093/"}
