The property also includes a horse barn, smokehouse and corn crib.","why_significant":"It is presented as an intact, early example of sophisticated Greek Revival design in Lowman, with a Classical/Palladian south facade and advanced features for its time. It is also tied to Dr. Hovey Everett, a prominent local physician, landowner and community leader who helped found the Chemung County Medical Society in 1837.","narrative":"Built in 1827 as a wedding present for Dr. Hovey Everett and his bride Cynthia Lowman, this Greek Revival farmhouse sits on a rise above County Route 60 in Lowman, Chemung County. A two-story pedimented stone and wood block is flanked by lower wings with parapet walls and urn balustrades, giving the south facade a Palladian look. Inside, a transverse stair hall, original wide-plank floors, grained doors and a basement kitchen with a beehive oven survive. Everett, a Yale graduate, practiced medicine in the valley for forty years, built up extensive landholdings and helped found the county medical society in 1837. Around 1860 he began remodeling the house as an Italianate villa, but he died in 1861 and his widow halted the work. The Greek Revival house stayed largely unchanged inside that shell until restoration began in 1978. A horse barn, smokehouse and corn crib also contribute to the 151-acre farm.","period_of_significance":"1827-1861","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still a single dwelling. The house was restored after 1978, when the Italianate shell from an unfinished ca. 1860 remodeling was removed to reveal the original form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.650661-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06001299.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06001299/9bbd85f60e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06001299/9bbd85f60e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr_Everett_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr_Everett_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316816","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Hovey_Everett_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5304158"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chemung-county/everett-dr-hovey-house-06001299/"}
