Dryer.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a largely intact early twentieth-century church that combines Arts and Crafts principles with freely interpreted Tudor Gothic detailing in modern materials. It is also one of the few surviving intact buildings reflecting Groveland Station's importance as a Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad support center.","narrative":"Sparta First Presbyterian Church occupies a one-acre lot at the corner of Groveland and Scottsburg Roads in Groveland Station, Livingston County. The congregation, organized around 1820, left its 1828 meetinghouse south of the hamlet and built here after the McNair sisters donated the land. The cornerstone was laid in November 1915 and construction finished the following year. Rochester architect Otis W. Dryer designed it with a gabled main block, a south wing and a crenellated corner tower. Walls are tile with a gray concrete veneer and red brick trim, and Tudor-arched windows hold stained and leaded glass. Inside, the sanctuary has oak pews and woodwork, and the basement holds kitchen and dining space. The building is considered significant as a largely intact local example of Arts and Crafts inspired church design. It also remains one of the few surviving reminders of the hamlet's prosperity as a Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad fueling and engine base, since the railroad facilities and YMCA are gone.","period_of_significance":"1915","architect_builder":"Otis W.
