It is also significant under Criterion A as an educational building that served the hamlet from its construction until it closed in 1956, and it retains a high degree of original character inside and out.","narrative":"Standing on Rose Hill Road in the small hamlet of Borodino, this one-room schoolhouse measures 36 by 24 feet and is clad in clapboard over a low stone foundation. Its Italianate character shows in the overhanging gabled roof with a wide plain frieze and no cornice returns, a centered gabled porch, six-over-six windows, and a square cupola that once held a bell. Inside, a single room with beaded-board walls and ceiling, chalkboards and a stovepipe hole recalls its classroom use. A rear shed addition likely housed privies. Property records show school trustees bought the lot in 1853, and maps place the school at this site by 1859. It served local children until 1956, when new state standards requiring plumbing and other facilities made continued operation impractical in an area without public water or sewer. The building remains well kept and retains much of its original character, conveying the story of rural public education in mid-nineteenth century New York.","period_of_significance":"c.1855-1956","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant in the current function; the form says the building is well maintained and in excellent condition, and its owners hope to use it for retail and educational purposes.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.361786-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06001206.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06001206/b5c6d04ff4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06001206/b5c6d04ff4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BorodinoSchool.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BorodinoSchool.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320303","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borodino_District_School_No._8","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4946208"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/borodino-district-school-8-06001206/"}
