It is also the oldest surviving church building in Boulder Creek and appears to be the oldest surviving Christian Science church building in Santa Cruz County.","narrative":"Grace Episcopal Church is a modest redwood church on Highway 9 in Boulder Creek, built in 1906 for a Grace Mission congregation. Lay reader Arthur Darwall and his son are credited with building it. The rectangular gabled building has an entrance portico, lancet windows with curved mullions, gothic arched double doors and an interior of exposed redwood with scissor trusses and a vaulted ceiling. Its design follows English Gothic Revival ideas using local materials. The Episcopal congregation consolidated with St. Andrews in Ben Lomond around 1915, and the Christian Science Society bought the building in 1923. The Boulder Creek Historical Society acquired it in 1995 to house the San Lorenzo Valley Museum. Other early churches in town were burned or demolished, leaving this as the oldest surviving church building in Boulder Creek. It was recognized for its architecture, its redwood construction and its largely intact original fabric, including windows, hardware and floor plan.","period_of_significance":"1906-1923","architect_builder":"Arthur William Wolfston Darwall and his son Arthur Leicester Darwall (credited with construction)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Second Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Now used as a museum (San Lorenzo Valley Museum) with the interior described as having remarkably high integrity; roof replaced in 2005.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.593302-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/06001158.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06001158/50acb7ada5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06001158/50acb7ada5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mrwrite","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Grace_Episcopal_Chrurch.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Mrwrite</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Grace_Episcopal_Chrurch.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861861","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Lorenzo_Valley_Museum","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5591108"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-cruz-county/grace-episcopal-church-06001158/"}
