Northwestern University sold the lot to the club in 1911. The two-and-one-half story red brick building has a compound plan and a steeply pitched slate cross-gambrel roof typical of Dutch Colonial Revival design. Other features include brick quoins, a stepped parapet over the south entrance, and a two-story porch with fluted Doric columns, enclosed in 1938. Inside are a large parlor with a fireplace and plaster ornament, and a second-floor auditorium. A kitchen wing was added in 1961 and the east portico was rebuilt in 1966. The club organized in the late 1880s and raised money for an emergency hospital during a typhoid epidemic. It also backed child labor protections and helped found parent-teacher groups. The building gave the growing membership a permanent home and still serves as a social and civic center.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Ernest Mayo, architect","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Revivals/Colonial Revival (Dutch Colonial Revival)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a social/civic clubhouse; the south porch was enclosed in 1938, a kitchen wing was added in 1961, and the east portico was rebuilt in 1966-67.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.344746-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/8926/28892655/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/06001020.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06001020/04f3c5b2e9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06001020/04f3c5b2e9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Teemu008 from Palatine, Illinois","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Womans_Club_of_Evanston_(7345675592).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Teemu008 from Palatine, Illinois</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Womans_Club_of_Evanston_(7345675592).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892655","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman%27s_Club_of_Evanston","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q27958474"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/womans-club-of-evanston-06001020/"}
