It was used from about 1800 to about 1930 and is enclosed by a dry-laid fieldstone wall.","why_significant":"It is the last remaining historic feature of the former Cosman farmstead, settled by German-born immigrants Johannas and Barbara Cosman in the mid-18th century. It documents the family's ties to the area and the pre-Revolutionary settlement of the region. It is also a typical small rural family cemetery of the 18th and early 19th centuries.","narrative":"This small family cemetery sits on the west side of Lattintown Road near Middle Hope, in the Town of Newburgh, Orange County. Occupying less than an acre, it is enclosed by a knee-height, dry-laid fieldstone wall and shaded by mature trees. About 30 gravestones are visible, though as many as 50 people may be buried here, and a granite tablet placed by family members marks the earliest burials, those of Johannas and Barbara Cosman. Their brownstone and limestone markers include three-lobed stones typical of the early 19th century. Many stones are weathered or broken. The cemetery was in use from about 1800 until it filled around 1930. It is the only surviving feature of the Cosman farmstead, settled by German-born immigrants in the mid-18th century. Johannas Cosman also served as a private in a New York provincial company during the French and Indian War. The site is valued as a record of early settlement and as a typical rural family burial ground.","period_of_significance":"c. 1801-1810","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Cemetery retains its fieldstone perimeter wall; about 30 gravestones are visible, many weathered or broken, and it is believed to have been filled around 1930.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.635132-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06001002.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06001002/186894bbfe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06001002/186894bbfe-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JoeProfaciJr","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cosman_Cemetery.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">JoeProfaciJr</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cosman_Cemetery.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320614","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosman_Family_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5173971"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/cosman-family-cemetery-06001002/"}
